What a potty tray does
A dog potty tray is a plastic base that holds a pee pad, artificial turf, or a grate. It keeps liquid contained, stops pads from sliding, and gives your dog a clearly defined place to go. Many trays double as pee pad holders.
Tray designs compared
| Design | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat frame | Small puppies | Splash from leg-lifters |
| Grate | Chewers | Extra cleaning |
| Wall | Leg-lifters | Size |
| Turf tray | Grass-trained dogs | Emptying the pan |
Main designs
- Flat frame trays: clip the edges of a pad flat. Simple and low for small puppies.
- Grate (mesh) trays: a raised grid keeps paws off the pad and discourages chewing.
- Wall trays: a back or side wall for dogs that lift a leg.
- Turf trays: artificial grass over a drainage layer and collection pan; see dog potty grass.
Sizing and fit
Your dog should be able to stand and turn fully on the tray. If you will use disposable pads, check the tray's listed compatible pad size against the pads you buy.
Cleaning
Empty and rinse trays with a collection pan regularly so urine doesn't sit and smell. Wash the tray and grate with warm water and an enzymatic cleaner; avoid harsh chemicals that can linger.
