What is a dog litter box?
A dog litter box is a low-sided box or tray, usually larger than a cat box and often with one lower entry side, filled with dog litter or lined with a pee pad. It's mainly used for small and toy breeds, puppies, and dogs in apartments. Large dogs can use one, but the box has to be big enough to turn around in comfortably.
Litter options
| Litter | Notes |
|---|---|
| Paper pellets | Common for dogs, large pellets |
| Wood pellets | Absorbent, natural scent |
| Pee pad lining | No litter to track |
| Clumping cat litter | Generally avoided for dogs |
Choosing litter
- Paper or recycled-newspaper pellets are commonly marketed for dogs and are larger than cat litter, which makes them less appealing to eat.
- Wood pellets are another common option.
- Clumping cat litter is generally not recommended for dogs, since some dogs eat litter. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
- Pad-lined boxes skip litter entirely and use a disposable or washable pad.
Sizing
Measure your dog from nose to base of tail and pick a box at least that long, with room to turn. A low entry helps puppies, seniors, and short-legged breeds. Leg-lifters do better with a high back wall.
Training a dog to use it
Use the same routine as pee pad training: take your dog to the box after waking, eating, and play, use a short cue, and reward immediately when they go. Some owners place a soiled pad or a bit of used litter in the box at first so it smells right.
Cleaning
Scoop solids daily, replace wet litter as needed, and fully empty and wash the box regularly with an enzymatic cleaner.
