Picking pads
Puppy pads differ in size, number of absorbent layers, leak-proof backing, and whether they include an attractant scent. Larger pads are more forgiving for beginners.
Pad features compared
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Size | Bigger is more forgiving |
| Layers | More absorbency, fewer leaks |
| Leak-proof backing | Protects floors |
| Attractant | May help some puppies |
Placement
Place pads away from food, water, and bedding, ideally near the door you will eventually use for outdoor trips if you plan to transition.
Transitioning outside
Once your puppy reliably uses the pad, move it gradually toward the door, then outside, and finally remove it. Ask your vet about when outdoor areas are safe based on vaccination status.
